Troupe Mélangées Mission Statement
Troupe Mélangées is a non-profit tribal-fusion ethnic dance group in Claremont, California, committed to each other in friendship, to the dance, and to the enjoyment of movement through synchronized improvisation.  With guidance from our troupe director, we come to consensus about the dances we perform, membership, and the types of events we attend. Mélangées means mixed in French and we are mixed in age, ability, ethnicity, musical preference, etc.  We celebrate those differences in each other and in the dance.

TM's signature combinations come from the steps and ideas all members of the troupe bring from the different kinds of dance they love.  Robin structures those moves into their combinations - so it's a true creative fusion of styles.

Whether it's Middle Eastern, Jazzy-funk, Latin, Indian, or African rhythms, you'll find TM's high energy moves you, and Dr.RJ's infectious joy contributes to TM's reputation for doing Tribal With A Smile.

DIRECTOR

Robin Johnson (director, choreographer)
Robin loves the energy and world music grooves that are expressed through TM's tribal fusion styling.  She's been dancing all of her life. Her most influential belly dance teachers are Aziza Sa'id and Mesmera. She's been inspired philosophically by Paulette Rees-Denis of Gypsy Caravan, Kajira Djoumana, Heidi of Domba, and Amy Sigil of Unmata and is a certified ATS instructor by Carolena Nericcio of Fat Chance Belly Dance.

Troupe Mélangées was formed with some of the core students from Robin’s belly dance class in 2004.  We dance to both recorded music and live percussion with our brother & sister drumm
ers from the Village Mandala drum circle.  Troupe Mélangées dances with a variety of props – finger cymbals or zils, colorful fans and tribal skirts, veils, traditional baskets, and scimitars / swords.

While we have a shared movement vocabulary and the synchronized improvisation typical of tribal style belly dancing, we build on American Tribal Style (ATS) and fuse ethnic dance moves from Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, Polynesia, and India with our traditional Middle Eastern moves.  We have our own CTS combinations.

The three things people comment about most are our
1. our energy.
We have found that most audiences prefer the faster dances so we tend to dance faster and with more energy than most belly dancers.  We even have two Cardio-Tribal workout DVD’s.

2. Our colorful costumes.  The costumes are an eclectic ethnic mix that enhance our performances.  Our costumes differ from many American’s view of belly dance costuming.  Our costuming looks more folkloric.

3. Our joy in the dance. We’re known for doing tribal with a smile.  We connect and engage with our audience - sharing our joy of the dance with them – not just when we’re performing, but also by encouraging audience interaction with us.
